Job
Description :
This is an exciting opportunity to conduct blue-skies research into the next generation of tangible, haptic display technology!
You will design, prototype, and evaluate novel displays and user interfaces that incorporate force-input and force-feedback. You will explore various engineering approaches to integrate force into a display, develop and evaluate novel interaction techniques that exploit this new modality, and produce demonstrator applications. You will join a team of researchers on Prof Jason Alexander’s ERC Starting grant, FORCE-UI, a project that seeks to radically increase the expressivity of touchscreen-based interaction. You will publish your work at the leading venues for dissemination in Human-Computer Interaction including ACM CHI, ACM UIST, ACM ToCHI, World Haptics, and ACM SIGGRAPH.
We seek applications from individuals who are strongly motivated to help push the boundaries of knowledge and technology in this research area. You will have experience in rapid hardware prototyping, and ideally the design and evaluation of interactive systems with end-users. You should have excellent communication skills, the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, show a high level of initiative, and have the ability to conduct all aspects of the research process.
The appointment will be made at a level commensurate with your experience. As a Research Associate you will hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Haptics, Robotics, Mechatronics, or other relevant field and be able to demonstrate a suitable publication track record. To be appointed at the Research Fellow level, you will have considerable post-doctoral research experience in a relevant field, a strong publication record, and be able to demonstrate leadership and mentorship in your area of specialisation.
The position is available from 1 June 2021 for a fixed term of 3 years.
You will be hosted in the growing Human-Computer Interaction group in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath. Applicants are encouraged to contact Prof Jason Alexander (jma73@bath.ac.uk) before applying to discuss the suitability of their experience and/or qualifications, and to obtain additional information about the position. |
