In addition to a competitive salary, you might also be eligible for extra allowances depending on the organisation you join. These could include bonuses for particular skills or the chance to earn language-related allowances once you’re in the role.
Flexible working:
Although this is an office-based role, we recognise the importance of a healthy work-life balance and offer part-time, compressed hours, or other flexible working arrangements to support you.

MI5 and MI6 are part of the UK’s Intelligence Services. We work together to safeguard Britain’s people, interests, and businesses from various threats at home, overseas and online, including cyber-attacks, espionage, terrorism, and organised crime. Working across our vital missions, you’ll make a real impact at the heart of national security, all within a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
As an Arabic Language Specialist, you’ll play a pivotal role in uncovering meaning and context within foreign language materials. Whether you’re translating, transcribing, or analysing content, you’ll piece together information from a range of sources to unlock intelligence that shapes operations. Additionally, your knowledge of Arabic-speaking countries and regions will help build a clearer picture of the culture, norms and practices, providing colleagues with valuable insights.
Your expertise will be at the heart of our mission, valued just as much as that of our analysts and operational teams. Through reports and briefings, you’ll help colleagues gain a better understanding of the regions where Arabic is spoken and identify intelligence that might otherwise be missed. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you’ll often operate independently, but always within a supportive, collaborative language community that’s keen to share knowledge and offer help.
You’ll play a key role in enhancing our language capabilities, whether by supporting new initiatives or contributing to the development of language technology tools and AI. Your work will help ensure our capabilities continue to evolve in response to changing demands. You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to grow your own skills, with access to a wide range of tools and training that support your development.
You don’t need prior experience in a language role to apply. However, proficiency in Arabic to at least C1 level of the CEFR is required across all disciplines reading, writing, speaking and listening. This should be supported by cultural knowledge of the language, as well as the countries and regions where Arabic is spoken. You’ll also need English Language at GCSE Grade C/4 or above, or an equivalent qualification.
Upon joining, a structured training plan will help you settle into the role. And, support is always close at hand from a mentor or ‘buddy’, as well as your line manager. There are also plenty of opportunities to build your skills, from language classes to maintain your Arabic fluency, to gaining in-house and external qualifications.
We’re proud of our open, inclusive workplace, where you’ll find a range of sports, interest groups, and social clubs. Our growing affinity networks include ethnic minority and gender equality groups, wellbeing, mental health, neurodiversity and disability communities, LGBTQ+ support groups, and faith/no-faith networks. You can learn more on the diversity pages of our websites.
To be eligible to apply, you must be a British citizen. If you hold dual nationality, one of which is British, you’ll still be considered. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years. This requirement is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. You can apply at the age of 17; however, if successful, you won’t be offered a start date before your 18th birthday. Full eligibility details can be found on our website. |
